THE CAT SONG

My name is the wind
I sing to the cats,
large and small, wild and tame,
hunting marsh deer or rats.

I sing to the Tigers
that stalk the jungle night.
I sing to the Panthers
sisters of night.

I sing to the Lions
and to the Ocelots
to Leopards and Cougars,
cats with stripes, cats with spots.

Jaguars and Pumas
Siamese and Lynx
I know where each sleeps
and I know how each thinks.

I sing to the Bobcats,
house cats, warm and small.
They listen and answer
when they hear my call.

I snarl and I whine
and they snarl in return.
I call and they answer.
I sing and they yearn.

I sing to the Cheetahs,
my name is the wind.
They run with me, race with me
to see where I've been.

I sing to the cats
that walk the grassy plains.
I sing on desert nights
and I sing in rain forest rains.

I sing to cats in cages,
and on leashes restrained,
to cats in apartments,
long haired, short haired, maned.

I snarl and I whine
and they snarl in return.
I call and they answer.
I sing and they yearn.

My name is the wind
and I sing to the cats,
large and small, wild and tame,
hunting marsh deer or rats.
